
Cleveland State Open Awaits Flashes Saturday

Twenty-one Kent State wrestlers will be in action Saturday at the 13th annual Cleveland State Open, beginning at 9 a.m., inside Woodling Gym. Â Six mats will play host to over 200 wrestlers with no team scores kept and a number of Golden Flashes competing unattached.

History at Cleveland State Open
In 2015, Devin Nye won a 285-pound title at the Cleveland State Open, going 4-0 with two pins. That season, Anthony Tutolo, Isaac Bast and Casey Sparkman all placed third. Sparkman's four wins included a pin and two major decisions.

- The NWCA honored Kent State for having the fourth highest grade point average in the nation last season at 3.423.
- Casey Sparkman leads the Flashes with 10 bonus-point victories (5 tech falls, 5 major decisions). He is also the Flashes' active leader in career victories with 94.
- Sophomore Tim Rooney was named Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 15, after going 5-0 at the Journeymen Duals and Journeymen Classic.
- Devin Nye leads the team with five pins on the season and his 31 career pins rank fifth among Kent State's career leaders.
- Five of the Flashes' six dual wins this year have been by 11 or more points.
- Since the 2005-06 season, Kent State is 151-83-1 in dual meets and 48-24-1 in MAC duals.
- Junior Kyle Conel is 18-1 in career dual meets.Â
Last Time Out
Kent State and Buffalo both won five matches in this past Sunday's MAC dual meet. An overtime major decision by the Bulls made the difference in their 16-15 road victory. The Golden Flashes earned five straight victories from 141-174 (Tim Rooney, Nick Monico, Casey Sparkman, Isaac Bast, Dylan Barreiro). Rooney, Monico and Barreiro each earned their first career MAC dual win.

The Golden Flashes will compete in four dual meets over two days at the South Beach Duals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Dec. 29-30. Kent State will take on Columbia, No. 13 Cornell and SIU-Edwardsvile along with a neutral site Mid-American Conference dual against No. 4 Missouri.
