CLEVELAND – Freshman 125-pounder Jake Ferri and junior heavyweight Devin Nye each won individual titles at the Cleveland State Open Saturday at Woodling Gym. In a tournament that lasted nearly 12 hours, three other Golden Flashes earned top six finishes.
Ferri claimed his first college tournament title, going 4-0 with a pair of major decisions.
"Jake was as good as I've ever seen him," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "I think he really enjoyed stepping up his game and showing everybody what he could do. And we're very excited to have him at 125 for the next four years."
Nye knocked off Gardner Webb's Lathan Bumgarner 5-2 in the finals to complete a 4-0 day. It was Nye's second career Cleveland State Open crown.
"Devin stayed in good position all tournament," Andrassy said. "He's better than he realizes he is and hopefully he can build some confidence from this."
The heavyweight bracket also saw a solid performance from freshman Billy Bolia, who went 3-2. Bolia defeated opponents from Michigan State, Ohio and Virginia.
The Golden Flashes were well-represented at 141 pounds as Tim Rooney placed third with a 4-1 mark and Nick Henneman was fifth, going 5-1 with three pins. Senior Chance Driscoll and sophomore Jake Newhouse each went 2-2 at 141. Newhouse earned a tech fall and a major decision.
Freshman Kody Komara had one of the most impressive outings for the Flashes going 5-1 with a pair of major decisions. Komara was unable to place due to reaching the NCAA's six-match limit.
Junior Isaac Bast came away with a sixth place at 165. Bast went 4-2 with a pair of major decisions.
Redshirt Freshman Lane Hinkle also competed at 165, recording pins in his first two bouts. Hinkle stuck Cornell's Milik Dawkins in the second period and Mount Union's Conner Homan in the first.
Junior Kyle Conel finished 4-1 at 197 before his day ended on a medical forfeit. Conel pinned Lock Haven's Ray Bernot and Cleveland State's Mason Giordano.
Sophomore Shane Mast also had his day cut short with a medical forfeit at 197, but not before advancing to the quarterfinals. Mast topped Ohio's Mason Kroening 9-5 and Cleveland State's Vincenzo Marinucci 7-3.
Sophomore Ben Heyob went 3-2 at 157 pounds. Heyob topped Michigan State's Nathan Atienza 5-3 to start his day. His two consolation bracket victories included a 41-second pin of Mount Union's Jake Taylor.
Freshman Colin McCracken (184) went 2-2 with a pin and 12-9 decision over Michigan State's Cameron Caffey.
The Golden Flashes return to action with four dual meets over two days at the South Beach Duals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Dec. 29-30.
