CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the Distinguished Scholar-Athletes from the seven fall sports during the 2017-18 academic season late Thursday (Dec. 21), with 12 Golden Flashes receiving the honor. Women's soccer led Kent State Athletics with five honorees.
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete is a fourth-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the fall sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests is automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Faculty athletic representatives from each conference institution then select the 'best of the best' from the Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award. The number of honorees from each sport are equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 20% of nominees, whichever is greater.
Seniors Morgan Bing (women's cross country), Kelsey Bittinger (volleyball), George Bollas (football), Ines Delpech (field hockey), Jaime Eiben (soccer) and Silvia Figa Malgosa (field hockey) earned the distinction for the third straight year, while seniors Kristen Brots (soccer) and Karli Paracca (soccer) and junior Ashleah McDonald (soccer) received their second straight honor.
Later this winter and spring, the MAC will announce the Distinguished Scholar-Athletes from the remaining 16 winter and spring sports that it sponsors.
