Gymnastics Hosts Annual Blue-Gold Meet Saturday

KENT, Ohio- The Kent State Gymnastics team will compete for the first time this season in its annual Blue-Gold exhibition meet on Saturday, December 9 at 4 p.m. at the Memorial Athletic Convocation Center (MACC).
The Golden Flashes' roster features 14 gymnasts returning from last season's team, which finished 3-3 in Mid-American Conference meets and qualified for the NCAA Regional competition for the ninth time in the past 10 years.  Â
KENT STATE OVERVIEW
Returning for the Flashes is senior Rachel Stypinski who is a two-time MAC Gymnast of the Year and also won the all-around on bars and beam at the 2017 MAC Championships at Bowling Green. She also was recognized as a 2017 All-American for floor and beam.
Senior Brooke Timko looks to have a strong season after finishing second on the team last season on bars while having six top three finishes on the event.
Junior Dara Williams had a strong sophomore showing last season, finishing third on the team on bars as well as second on vault with a high score of 9.825 on both events. She also completed the season with three top three finishes on vault.
Other returnees for Kent State include sophomore Jade Brown, junior Kennedy Plude, junior Sarah Lippowitsch and senior Michaela Romito all of whom competed at regionals last year.
This years blue team will be Brown, Gabby Williams, Nasha Manitkul-Davis, Plude, Lippowitsch, Abby Fletcher, Emily Kelly, Timko and Michaela Romito. The gold team will be Stypinski, Sydney Chapman, Alyssa Quinlan, Toshi Richard, Ali Marrero, Nuriya Mack, Dara Williams, Sarah McCarty and Sammi Nero.Â
FLASHBACK TO LAST YEAR'S BLUE/GOLD MEET
Last season's Blue-Gold meet took place at Fitzgerald Field House at the University of Pittsburgh. Kent State posted a score of 194.000 in the exhibition meet. The Golden Flashes had 13 different gymnasts participate in the meet, including three competing in their first collegiate meet.
Team scores included 47.750 on bars, 48.800 on vault, and 49.125 on beam, which was Kent State's highest score since March 13, 2013. Standout performers on bars were Stypinski and Timko, who both scored a 9.700 to tie for fourth in the event. Stypinski also finished first on floor with a score of 9.825.
On beam, the top four spots went to Kent State with Stypinski finishing first (9.900), while Brown (9.800) and Timko (9.800) both tied for fourth. Lippowitsch finished sixth with a 9.750.
Williams put up a score of 9.875 on vault winning the event.
UP NEXT
Kent State will have over a month to prepare for their first regular season gymnastics meet against Centenary College, which will be held on Sunday, January 14 at 1 p.m. at the MACC.
