
Thomas and Tollerud Capture Individual Titles on Day One of MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Kent State track and field's Danniel Thomas (shot put) and Sam Tollerud (pole vault) each captured individual MAC Championships in their respected events on Friday, the first day of the 2017 Indoor MAC Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan.

With six women's going final on day one, Kent State's women's team is in third place with 33 points as Akron, while Akron leads with 62 points. Kent State's men's team is in fifth place with 10 points with only four events going final on day one.
Thomas earned her seventh career MAC Championship with a mark of 18.08m (59' 3.75"), which breaks the championship meet record of 17.71m that Thomas had previously set in 2015.
Tollerud claimed her first MAC Championship after clearing a height of 4.17m (13' 8") on her first attempt to finish just ahead of Lucy Bryan of Akron who cleared the 4.17m bar on her second attempt.
Maria Horrigan tied her pole vault personal-record of 3.97m (13' 0.25") en route to fifth place finish, earning four points for Golden Flashes.
Cayla Carey represented Kent State in the women's long jump, taking fourth with a jump of 5.9m (19' 4.25"). In the men's long jump, TJ Lawson and Samory Fraga captured fifth and sixth, respectively, with marks of 7.24m (23' 9") and 7.22m (23' 8").
Lawson also currently leads the men's heptathlon with 3,087 points after winning the high jump, long jump and shot put on day one. Ryan Looser is in seventh-place with 2,644 points and Mitchell Kubicki is in 10th with 2,522 points with three events left to be completed on day two.
The women's pentathlon concluded Friday as Kent State's Chelsea Laury finished eighth with 3,530 points. Laury's best event of the day was the 60m hurdles, in which she finished fifth with a time of 8.89 seconds.
David Paliscak secured fourth and four points in the men's shot with a mark of 17.08m (56' 0.25"), followed by Walter Petzel in sixth at 16.47m (54' 0.25") and Trevor Detillion in ninth at 15.72m (51' 6.75").
Sarah Pack, Tyler Williams, Olivia Gaus and Olivia Davis teamed up to run the women's distance medley relay, earing sixth place with a time of 12:00.25. On the men's side, Josh Gogan, Matthew Tobin, Sam Goodman, and Grant Onken took fifth-place with a time of 10:44.8.
Qualifying for the finals of their respected events is: Jorian Ordway (200m), Tyler Williams (400m), Brian Smith (60m, 200m), Brandon Harris (60m dash) and Matt Tobin (200, 400m).
Action from Bowen Field House picks up Saturday at 10 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles.
