MIAMI, Fla. – Two 9th-inning runs were the difference in Sunday's finale at FIU (2-5) as Kent State (6-1) took the 3-2 victory to win the series.
Back-to-back doubles by Tim DalPorto and Josh Hollander in the 3rd gave the Flashes the lead on the first runs of the day. The Panthers tied the game in the 7th on a walk and pair of singles.
It would remain locked at a run apiece until the final frame. In the top of the inning, Pete Schuler and Dom Iero both singled to put runners on the corners. DalPorto then came up big with a RBI base hit before Hollander followed yet again with a RBI base hit of his own.
FIU would get a run back in the bottom of the 9th on a walk, wild pitch and two ground outs, but Jared Skolnicki would earn the win with a three-pitch strikeout to end the game.
Hollander led the Flashes with three hits and two RBI on the day. Mason Mamarella, Iero and DalPorto all finished 2-for-4.
Joey Murray threw 5.1 shutout innings in the start with three hits, three walks and six strikeouts. Patrick Dayton came in to relieve Murray and struck out the only batter he faced. Skolnicki pitched the final 3.1 innings with two runs, three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
Next weekend Kent State will travel to Wake Forest for four games. They will play Radford on Friday, the hosts in a doubleheader on Saturday and then play Quinnipiac in the series finale on Sunday at noon.
