KENT, Ohio – The second men's basketball game of the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge between Kent State and Akron, hosted by the Golden Flashes, has been picked up by ESPN2. Tipoff for the March 3 game has been adjusted to 9 p.m.
The game is one of two in the program's historic rivalry, with the first showdown scheduled for Feb. 17 at Akron. That contest will be televised on ESPNU. The rivalry has been played 145 times since the 1915-16 season, with Kent State holding the edge, 73-72. The Flashes have successfully defended its home floor for three straight seasons, and has only lost one game in the M.A.C. Center against the Zips since 2009. In the 2013 loss, the Flashes evened the score in the second game at Akron.
The Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge is based on a time-honored competition for an historic wooden wagon wheel trophy awarded originally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. Since the 2011-12 academic year, the rivalry was broadened to include 14 NCAA varsity sports, with victories in each sport adding one point to the challenge standings.
