Kent State's men's and women's track and field programs will head to Geneva, Ohio this weekend to partake in the 2017 SPIRE Division I Invitational hosted by the SPIRE Institute.

This weekend marks the sixth edition of the SPIRE D1 Invitational which will once again feature some of the top student-athletes from around the region and the country. The action gets underway at 2 p.m. Friday with the women's pentathlon, women's pole vault and women's weight throw. You can view the action from the SPIRE Institute with a subscription to FloTrack.
LAST TIME OUT
A Kent State indoor track and field record fell last weekend, as TJ Lawson totaled 5,666 points in the heptathlon at the Akron Invitational. Lawson set personal-records in the 60m dash, 1,000m run, high jump, long jump and pole vault en route to a second place finish in the event.
Freshman Swann Phelippeau turned in an impressive performance in the women's mile, taking second with a PR of 4:58.1, the tenth-fastest time in the Kent State record book. Also moving up in the Kent State record book after last weekend was AJ Stevens who jumped a career-best 15.43m (50' 7.25") in the men's triple jump, putting him seventh all-time.
RANKING THE GOLDEN FLASHES
• Lawson's school record total of 5,666 points leads the Mid-American Conference and ranks 11th in the nation.
• Danniel Thomas holds the third-best shot put in the nation and ranks first in the MAC at 17.50m (57' 5").
• Sam Tollerud's school record in the pole vault of 4.20m (13' 9.25") is 10th-best in the country and puts her second in the MAC.
• Reggie Jagers III (men's weight throw) and Gabrielle Figueroa (women's weight throw) both lead the MAC with marks of 21.12m (69' 3.5") and 19.88m (65' 2.75"), respectively. Nationally, Jagers ranks 16th and Figueroa ranks 25th.
• Brian Smith ranks second in the conference in the 60m dash (6.76) and 200m dash (21.38).
UP NEXT
The Golden Flashes return to the Kent State Field House next weekend to host the Kent State Tune Up on Saturday, Feb. 18. The tune up is the final meet before the Indoor MAC Championships slated for Feb. 24-25.
