INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Kent State gymnastics team will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia to compete in the NCAA Morgantown Regional hosted by West Virginia University, the NCAA announced Monday (March 20) afternoon. The competition will begin at 4 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, April 1.
The Golden Flashes finished the regular season with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 195.720, which ranked 31st in the country, to qualify for their ninth NCAA Regional in the past 10 seasons.
The Morgantown Regional field also includes No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 Michigan, No. 18 Southern Utah, George Washington and host West Virginia. Kent State competed against Michigan, George Washington and West Virginia during the regular season.
Kent State is led by Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Year Rachel Stypinski, who won the all-around, bars and beam titles at the MAC Champonships on Saturday. Seniors Jordan Hardison and Skyelee Lamano were named to the All-MAC Second Team and join Stypinski as part of a floor lineup that has a RQS of 49.215 and is tied for 17th in the country. All three gymnasts rank among the top 100 individually.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in St. Louis, Missouri, April 14-15, hosted by the University of Missouri, Columbia and the St. Louis Sports Commission. The top two teams from the Champaign, Fayetteville and Seattle regionals will compete in one of the semifinals, and the top two teams from the Gainesville, Lincoln and Morgantown regionals will compete in the other semifinal.
In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
