CLEVELAND, Ohio – Maddy Grimm has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. It is the ninth time she has received the award during her collegiate career.
Grimm had another monster week as the Golden Flashes opened the home schedule with five games at the Diamond at Dix. She batted .636 with four of her seven hits being home runs for a 1.727 slugging percentage, while also reaching base on seven walks and a hit by pitch for a .789 on-base percentage. Six of the seven walks were intentional, and all seven came on just four pitches. Grimm scored six runs and had a team-high eight RBIs.
In the first game of the homestand, Grimm collected two hits off 2016 MAC Pitcher of the Year Savannah Jo Dorsey. She followed with homers in her first two at-bats in the second game of the doubleheader for the seventh multi-home run game of her career.
After being intentionally walked with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 1 Saturday against Northern Illinois, Grimm sprinted home from first base to give Kent State a 6-5 walk-off victory. She roped a single to the outfield to give the Flashes a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 and added a three-run home run to get the Flashes within 7-6 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After homering again in her first at-bat on Sunday, Grimm was intentionally walked by the Huskies in her next three trips to the plate.
Grimm is among the national leaders in several categories, including seventh in slugging percentage (.896), ninth in home runs (14), 13th in RBIs (44) and 27th in walks (28).
The senior slugger ranks second in the conference record book in home runs (64), RBIs (181) and slugging percentage (.779) while ranking third in runs scored (154) and fifth in walks (110).
Kent State (15-21, 5-6 MAC) resumes Mid-American Conference play with a trip to Athens Wednesday to conclude the season series against Ohio and is then back in action at the Diamond at Dix this weekend for a series against Miami.
