DEKALB, Ill. – Solid pitching from Zach Willeman and Jared Skolnicki helped Kent State (19-11, 7-1) take another Mid-American Conference series as it beat Northern Illinois (9-25, 5-6) on Saturday.
Willeman went 7.0 in the start with just one earned run. He only allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Skolnicki followed to earn the save as he threw the final two frames with two hits and two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Flashes offered up run support from the onset as they scored two runs in the opening inning. Nick Kanavas reached to start the game after he was hit by a pitch. Mason Mamarella and Luke Burch were both walked to load the bases. Dylan Rosa then picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice. Reilly Hawkins earned the other RBI of the inning as he hit a sacrifice fly to score Burch.
The other two Kent State runs came in the 5th when Burch was walked and scored again on a homerun off the bat of Rosa.
The only blemish of the day came in the 4th. Northern Illinois loaded the bases with no outs, but Willeman and the defense worked out the jam with a double play and groundout to limit the damage to a single run.
Kanavas went 2-for-4 on the day while Rosa had a team-high three RBI while also getting two hits in four at-bats.
The final game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
