KENT, Ohio – The No. 12 Kent State University men's golf team will defend its title at the 2017 MAC Championship in Nashport, Ohio at the Virtues Golf Club April 28-30.
The tournament format features four rounds of golf over three days. 36 holes will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, with one round on Saturday and Sunday. The event is free to attend for all fans in the area. Live scoring will be provided throughout at the link above.
As the 12th ranked team in the nation, Kent State enters the tournament as the favorites to repeat and go on to contend in the NCAA Tournament. The rest of the field is ranked by Golfstat as follows: No. 110 Eastern Michigan, No. 131 Ball State, No. 138 Akron, No. 140 Bowling Green, No. 161 Toledo, No. 164 Northern Illinois, No. 168 Ohio and No. 174 Miami.
The Golden Flashes have reached their elite national ranking through the team's depth. All five golfers in the lineup are ranked in the national top-200, and all five players have led the team at some point this season. However, the individual championship will not go uncontested. Other nationally ranked golfers in the field vying for the individual crown are Ohio's Peyton White and Miami's Patrick Flavin.
The group's credentials are undeniable, and a postseason run starting this weekend would put the cap on a historically dominant year. If the season ended today, Kent State's scoring average of 284.61 would beat the previous low mark by four strokes. This year's team also owns the records for: An 87.2 finish percentage, 22 eagles, as well as average scores for par 3's, 4's and 5's. By round, the three lowest team scores in program history were set this season.
Over the years, Kent State has left its mark on the MAC Championship and is routinely the team to beat. The Flashes are the defending champions, have won four of the past five titles as well as 19 in the last 28 years.
