Kent State graduate Najee Murray (Steubenville, Ohio) signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns Monday. The Browns brought in 17 tryout players for their three-day rookie minicamp May 12-14, but Murray was one of only two players offered a contract Monday.
An All-Mid-American Conference First Team selection, Murray was considered undersized for the NFL, but proved his worth over the weekend in Berea. The lockdown cover cornerback became the seventh Kent State alum on a current NFL roster.
Murray also gained the attention of NFL scouts after being chosen to play in the 2017 Tropical Bowl. As a senior he ranked in the nation's top 10 in passes defended. Murray had a hand in five turnovers with two interceptions, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown.
With Murray's help, the Golden Flashes ranked No. 1 in the MAC in pass efficiency defense in 2016.
Cleveland's first preseason game is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 10.
