KENT, Ohio – Kent State University Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen has announced a contract extension for head men's basketball coach Rob Senderoff through the 2021-22 season.
"Rob and his staff have continued the outstanding basketball tradition at Kent State," said Nielsen. "This extension represents our commitment to the men's basketball program as they seek even higher levels of accomplishments in the upcoming years. Winning championships and graduating student-athletes, Rob had certainly delivered."
The contract extension comes on the heels of the program's Mid-American Conference Championship winning season and the Golden Flashes' return to the NCAA Tournament. Led by All-MAC First Team honoree Jimmy Hall, Kent State won 22 games, nine of which came in the last 11 games. The Flashes scored a total of 2,772 points, a new program record.
This extension is in line with Kent State's strategic vision for the athletic department: "The Game Plan." Through this strategic vision, men's basketball is Kent State athletics' initial vehicle to national distinction.
"I'm grateful in the confidence that President Beverly Warren and Joel Nielsen have put in my staff and me," said Senderoff. "The support for basketball at Kent State is tremendous for our student-athletes. Our entire program is excited to defend the MAC Championship next season and build on our success for years to come."
Senderoff has had consistent success over his six seasons at Kent State, advancing to the postseason four times. His 122-81 record places him third all-time in wins, and within reach of the program record. He is currently 16 wins behind Jim Christian (2002-08) and 26 behind Jim McDonald (1982-92). He is one of only three coaches in program history with a winning percentage above .600 over five or more seasons.
Senderoff has also led the Flashes to success in the classroom, Over six seasons, he has graduated every student-athlete that has made it through their senior season. The program currently ranks in the top-5 of the MAC in Graduation Success Rate and Academic Progress Rate.
Kent State has not had a losing record in any season under Senderoff, matched only by Akron and Toledo over the last six years in the MAC. Along the way, Senderoff's teams have claimed high profile victories, defeating West Virginia University in Morgantown, the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and most recently, the University of Texas in Austin.
Senderoff is a 22-year veteran in collegiate basketball, 13 of which have come at Kent State. He first served as an assistant coach from 2002-06 and returned as the associate head coach from 2008-11. He currently serves on the National Association of Basketball Coaches Congress as the Mid-American Conference representative.
