During the first week of preseason camp, Kent State's football team spent a day away from the gridiron Sunday (Aug. 6) to help out two area organizations. The Golden Flashes broke up into two groups, heading to the Multi-County Juvenile Attention System in Canton and Haven of Rest in Akron.
The Multi-County Juvenile Attention System provides detention and rehabilitation services to the Juvenile Courts of five counties in northeast Ohio. MCJAS treats juvenile, delinquent offenders and offers services to their families in such a manner as to strengthen both the youth and their family, and strives to reduce the likelihood of the youth re-entering the criminal justice system.
A group of Kent State seniors and juniors, played flag football, basketball and spoke to the teens one-on-one about their past, giving advice to help them better themselves in the future.
"We got a sense of what they've been through and what they're still going through as young men," junior tackle Stefano Millin said. "I'm sure they enjoyed having us down there but I feel we got the bigger benefit out of it."
Haven of Rest is one of the largest private social service agencies in the seven-county area. It provides programs and services that respond to the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of those enduring poverty.
Players at Haven of Rest helped prepare for the upcoming week. They prepped food, did laundry, made beds, and cleaned up the outside of the building.
The Flashes will continue to lend a hand to community organizations throughout the season.
Kent State opens its season Sept. 2 at Clemson, followed by its home opener Sept. 9 against Howard.
