KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University men's golf team has released its full schedule for the 2017-18 season.
The Golden Flashes tee off the year on Sept. 10 at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minnesota. From there, the Flashes will face a tough road that features both new challenges and familiar golf courses. Kent State will look to repeat as MAC Champions and return to the NCAA National Championship.
"It's a very challenging and difficult schedule," said head coach Herb Page, a national coach of the year finalist in 2016-17. "We are starting off the year ranked in the top-15 by GolfWeek, and week in and week out, we'll be facing top-25 teams across the country. When you are in the top 15 in the nation, this is the type of schedule you have to play."
The fall slate features five tournaments, with a new addition to cap off 2017. After the Gopher Invitational, Kent State will play in the following familiar tournaments: Maui Jim Invitational in Scottsdale, Arizona Sept. 21-22; Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tennessee Oct. 13-15; and the Royal Oaks Invitational in Dallas Oct. 23-24.
The highlight of the fall season comes from Nov. 3-5, when the Flashes travel to Ka'anapali, Hawaii for the Ka'anapali Classic. This is the first time the Flashes have traveled to the prestigious University of Hawaii tournament.
After a break, the spring season begins in Lafayette, Louisiana for the Louisiana Classics Feb. 26-27. Kent State will be defending the title at the tournament, after shooting 21-under par as a team in 2017. Two weeks later, Kent State will participate in the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Redemption will be on the mind in March, after last year's tournament was cut short due to inclement weather with the Flashes in second place.
The new addition to the spring schedule is the Hootie at Bulls Bay March 25-27. The tournament is hosted by the University of Charleston at the Bulls Bay Golf Club.
The spring regular season wraps up with three returning tournaments from previous seasons: The Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas April 8-9; the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana April 15-16; and the Robert Kepler Invitational in Columbus, Ohio April 22-23.
Kent State will defend the MAC Championship April 28-30 in Carmel, Indiana at the Sycamore Country Club. NCAA Regionals are slated for May 14-16. The 2018 NCAA National Championship will take place May 25-30 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
