WEST LONG BRNACH, N.J. – Kent State (0-2) dropped its second game of the season on Sunday by a score of 5-1 on the road at Monmouth (2-0).
The Hawks got an early lead after scoring off a corner 2:15 into the game. They made it 2-0 at the 15:38 mark on a fast break goal. Eight minutes later, their lead grew to 3-0. At the 29:31, Monmouth made it a 4-0 game as the team connected on a rebound.
Before the half, the Golden Flashes were able to get on the board. Alison Harmatz dribbled in from the left side and made a great pass in to Helen Harper in traffic. Standing by the post and facing defensive pressure, Harper snuck the ball past the keeper for her first goal of the young season.
The 4-1 score was altered in the second half as the Hawks tallied their final goal of the game, making it a 5-1 final.
The home team led in shots, 17-8, while the Flashes led in corner opportunities, 6-5. Harper led Kent State in shots with two with both coming on net. Azure Fernsler played all 70 minutes in goal with five saves.
The Golden Flashes are back in action on Friday, September 1 in a 3 p.m. game at St. Francis.
