No. 20 Men's Golf Finishes Third at Maui Jim

CAREFREE, Ariz. – The No. 20 Kent State University men's golf team finished third overall at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate after a close battle in the third and final round Sunday.
The Flashes finished the tournament at 5-under par 859, three strokes behind the champions Arizona State and a stroke behind No. 9 Georgia Tech. After rounds of 281 and 296, Kent State finished strong with a third round score of 6-under par 282.
"There were a lot of good things we did this weekend, but we need to learn how to finish tournaments," said head coach Herb Page. "If we can learn how to finish, we can be a top-10 program."
Gisli Sveinbergsson led the charge for Kent State, taking third place overall. The junior finished at 6-under par 210. He was in contention throughout the weekend, going under par in three straight rounds, including a round three score of 1-under par 71. Sveinbergsson finished strong with an eagle and two birdies over his last four holes. He was four strokes off the individual championship.
Bjarki Petursson finished tied for 12th overall and second among Flashes. Petursson ended at even par 216 and was also even par in his final round. One stroke ahead of Petursson was Chris Doody, finishing in a tie for 16th overall. Doody had the top round three score for Kent State at 3-under par 69. He was one stroke off his career low round.
All-American Ian Holt had his best round of the tournament Sunday, posting a 1-under par score of 71. Holt moved up to a tie for 22nd at 4-over par 220. Chase Johnson also ended his weekend with his best round at 1-under par 71, putting him in a tie for 33rd at 7-over par 223. Competing as an individual, Josh Gilkison finished tied for 50th at 12-over par. He improved in round three by four strokes to 1-over par 73.
Kent State will return to the course Oct. 13 in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tenn.
