KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University athletics department and the College Football Playoff Foundation have partnered to give $5,000 to the Kent City School District.
"This is built on the College Football Playoff Foundation for giving back to teachers and education, which they've been doing throughout their entire existence in Dallas," said Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen. "This is the first time they've reached out and actually offered cash value for the institutions to award to their local school districts."
The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation is the charitable arm of the College Football Playoff, supporting education across the country. The CFP Foundation's primary platform, Extra Yard for Teachers, elevates the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers through the implementation of programs in four focus areas: resources, recognition, recruitment and professional development. The CFP Foundation utilizes multiple partnerships to execute its initiatives and support positive educational outcomes.
The school district will implement the grant in their fundraising drive towards a virtual reality mobile classroom.
"It was natural for us to work with Kent City Schools when this program was presented to us," stated Nielsen. "We are fortunate because we have the funds available, and we can let the school district tell us how it can be utilized to the greatest value. The virtual reality piece is the direction they chose."
"The money will help us offset the cost for Google Expedition Glasses," said Superintendent George Joseph. "We've purchased 30 of them that will go in our virtual reality mobile classroom."
Every school in the Mid-American Conference took part in this project, together providing $60,000 for academic initiatives at elementary and/or secondary schools.
