OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kent State senior forward Jordan Korinek is one of 30 women's basketball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court selected as candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award®, the organization announced on Thursday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
A special education major who carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA, Korinek was a 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second Team selection and is a two-time Mid-American Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete. She is a two-time team captain for the Golden Flashes who leads by example and serves as a mentor to the underclassmen that are learning what it takes to be successful in college.
Korinek was part of a group of Kent State student-athletes who traveled to Aguacate, Belize following the Spring 2017 semester to work with Courts for Kids on the construction of a multipurpose sports court located next to the local school. Along with her teammates, Korinek has been extremely active in the local community as well. In October 2015, the women's basketball program was honored as a "Friend of the Kent City Schools" by the district's board of education for its impact on the students at Davey Elementary School.
On the court, she is a two-time All-MAC performer and one of just four Golden Flashes all-time who have reached the 1,000-point milestone while shooting 50-percent or better from the floor. Korinek currently ranks 4th in KSU history in field goal percentage (.506), 8th free throw percentage (.790), 10th in free throws made (327) and 14th in points (1,425). This season, she is third in the MAC in scoring (19.5 ppg) and ninth nationally in free throws made (79).
Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to fields of 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's Final Four® and NCAA Women's Final Four® this spring.
