KENT, Ohio — Kent State senior Jordan Korinek has been named to the 2018 Academic All-America® Women's Basketball First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Monday (March 12) afternoon.
A 2017 Academic All-America® Second Team honoree a year ago, Korinek is the third Golden Flash to be a multiple-time Academic All-America® selection and joins Kate Miller (2002) and Lindsay Shearer (2006) as the program's only student-athletes to be named to the first team. Last year, Korinek was joined on the second team by teammate Larissa Lurken to make Kent State the only women's basketball program in the country with multiple honorees.
A special education major with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average, the Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio native was named as one of 30 candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, which honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in community, classroom, character and competition, earlier in the season.
Korinek ranked second in the Mid-American Conference with a scoring average of 19.8 points per game and shot better than 50-percent from the floor to finish 11th in the conference. She is fifth in the nation in free throws made (197) and 10th in free throws attempted (234) for an 84.2-percent mark that ranked third in the MAC. Korinek pulled down a team-best 6.9 rebounds per game, leading the Flashes with five double-doubles, and also had a team-high 19 blocked shots.
The All-MAC First Team selection scored 634 points on the season, which ranks as the third-most in a season in program history. She trails only former teammate and NCAA Division I record holder Larissa Lurken for the most free throws made in a season (280). On two occasions, Korinek made 17 shots at the charity stripe, which ranks fifth on Kent State's single-game record list.
The only player in Golden Flashes history to score at least 1,000 points while shooting at least 50-percent from the field and at least 80-percent at the free throw line, Korinek made her mark throughout the Kent State record book. Her 1,786 points during her time in blue and gold ranks fifth on the all-time scoring list. She also ranks among the top-five in program history in field goals (652), field goal percentage (.504) and free throw percentage (.811), while ranking among the top-10 in scoring average (14.64), free throws made (445), free throws attempted (549), and rebounds (751).
The Capital One Academic All-America® Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. In order to be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and maintain at least a 3.30 grade point average.
