KENT, Ohio – For the second year in a row, Kent State senior Rachel Stypinski received regular season All-America honors from the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches for Women (NACGC/W). Stypinski has been named a second team regular season All-American on both balance beam and uneven bars.
Regular season All-American honors are determined by a gymnast's Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) ranking entering NCAA Regional competition. The top eight gymnasts (including ties) on each event and in the all-around earn first team honors, while the next eight are named to the second team.
Stypinski is one of two Golden Flashes to garner regular season All-America honors since the NACGC/W began awarding them in 2013, and is now a four-time All-American with second team honors for balance beam and floor exercise in 2017. She is one of 44 gymnasts to earn regular season All-America status this year and one of only 21 to be recognized for multiple events.
She finished the regular season tied for 10th in the nation on balance beam with a 9.920 RQS. Stypinski averaged a score of 9.840 over 10 meets and scored a personal-best 9.975 on the final beam routine of her career in a tri-meet against No. 18 George Washington and Temple on March 16 inside of the M.A.C. Center. She scored a 9.900 or better seven times and earned seven individual titles on beam.
Stypinski is tied for 15th in the country with a 9.910 RQS on bars. She tied the Kent State record by posting a 9.950 in meets at George Washington (Feb. 4) and Western Michigan (Feb. 11) and finished the regular season with an average of 9.832 over 10 meets. Stypinski scored a 9.900 or higher five times and earned six individual titles on bars.
The three-time Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Year put together one of the greatest seasons by a gymnast in conference history with the highest all-around RQS (39.450) since at least 1997, which is as far as the RoadToNationals.com database goes back, and the highest all-around average (39.292) since 2004.
Stypinski hopes to return to the bars lineup when Kent State heads to St. John Arena to compete in the NCAA Columbus Regional on April 7.
