Washington, D.C. – Kent State's bats dominated Georgetown's pitching on Wednesday afternoon in the nation's capital, drubbing the Hoyas, 17-5, in five innings. Allie Luther led the charge driving in six runs and crushed a double and a home run. The Golden Flashes (16-11) scored their most runs since dropping 18 against St. Bonaventure in 2015.
"It felt good to hit the ball around the yard like that. We showed a lot of confidence at the plate and every spot in the order produced," said head coach Eric Oakley. "It was a nice way to end the road trip and we will be ready for MAC play this weekend."
In the opening inning Kent State scored eight runs. Bailey Brownfield hit her second career triple to drive in two runs to begin the hit parade. Emily Dobbin, Carlee Selle and Holly Speers each had run scoring doubles in the inning.
Allie Luther began her big day at the plate with a two-run blast to right in the second and Carlee Selle followed up with a solo shot to left, the first of her career. Kennadie Goth drove in another on a sacrifice fly.
The bats were not done and scored five more runs in the fourth. Bailey Brownfield and Kristyn Eckl each drove in RBI singles. Allie Luther cleared the bases with a triple to the right centerfield gap.
Luther had a career day at the dish going 2-for4 with six RBIs, the most since Maddy Grimm had seven last year against Murray State. Brownfield was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and continued her hot hitting with her fourth and fifth hits of the week. Maria Cegledy walked in all three of her plate appearances and scored three runs. As a club Kent State was 10-for-20 with runners in scoring position.
Brenna Brownfield (4-4) got the win in the circle and threw 4.2 innings. She allowed six hits and two earned runs, while striking out a career-best four.
The Golden Flashes return home for a three-game series against Toledo. The series begins Friday, March 30 at the Diamond at Dix at 3 p.m. The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m. with the second game following thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
