No. 16 Women’s Golf Falls to Kentucky in Match-Play Playoff

LEXINGTON, Ky.- The No.16 women's golf team fell to Kentucky (3-2) in a one-day match-play playoff on Thursday at the par 72, 6,069 yard Big Blue Course.
Under windy and rainy conditions, the day started off with sophomore Marissa Kirkwood (Newcastle, Pa.) competing as an individual against Kentucky's Claire Carlin. Kirkwood won her match 1 up on the first playoff hole.
In the first match, junior Michaela Finn (Ängelholm, Sweden) who paired against Sarah Shipley fell 3 and 2.
Sophomore Karoline Stormo (Tvedestrand, Norway) won her pairing 3 and 2 against Kentucky's Ale Walker. With Finn's loss and Stormo's win, this tied things at 1-1.
Freshman Chloe Salort (Ermont, France) led most of her match against Isabelle Johansson going ahead as much as 3-up on the 10th hole. Johansson rolled a birdie putt to tie the match on the 16th hole and would win the next two holes as Salort fell 2-up.
Freshman Kory Nielsen (Kent, Ohio) won her match against Grace Rose 2 and 1. Down one, Nielsen evened things up on the 13th hole that put her in position to go 1-up on the next hole. She birdied on the 17th hole putting her at 2-up and claimed the 2 and 1 win.
In the match-deciding pairing with sophomore Pimnipa Panthong (Nakhon Sawan, Thailand) and Kentucky's Leonie Bettel, Panthong birdied on holes 11 and 13 to even the score and went ahead on hole 15 went par to go 1-up. From hole No. 16, the two traded pars over the next three holes sinking match-saving puts forcing play to go to extra holes. On the second playoff hole, Bettel took the 1-up win that gave Kentucky the 3-2 victory.
The Flashes will play one more regular season tournament before competing in the Mid-American Conference Championships, competing in the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, April 14-15.
