
Brownfield Does It Again and Hits Walk-Off Against Toledo

KENT, Ohio – Bailey Brownfield hit an opposite field single to walk-off the Golden Flashes in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 7-6 victory. Kent State (17-12, 3-2 MAC) got the series opening win over Toledo (20-13, 4-1 MAC) in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Diamond at Dix. The Rockets came back to run rule the Flashes, 12-3, in five innings in the second game.
Brownfield led the way for Kent State, recording five hits on the day with three doubles and three RBIs. Maria Cegledy was a highlight for the offense as well, going 3-for-3 in the first game and smashing the first home run of her career to leftfield.
Game 1: Kent State 7, Toledo 6
The Golden Flashes banged out 15 hits in the series opening win over the Rockets. Kent State's bats had success hitting with two outs, scoring four runs in the first two frames. Cegledy drove in a run on an infield single in the first. Holly Speers and Brownfield each had two out RBI doubles in the second. KSU also scored in the second when Vanessa Scoarste reached on an error.
The Rockets chipped away for two runs in the third inning on two RBI doubles by Kylie Norwood and Bailey Curry to cut into the deficit, 4-2.
Cegledy launched her first career homer in the sixth inning to give Kent State much needed run support to make the lead, 6-2.
Toledo came back to tie the game, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. The Rockets scored four runs on two hits and took advantage of four free bases on walks or hit by pitches.
Kaitlyn Miller and Kennadie Goth both singled to get Kent State going in the seventh and Speers was intentionally walked to setup Brownfield's heroics.
Madi Huck pitched the majority of the game throwing 6.1 innings and tying her career-high in strikeouts (6), but needed help in the seventh inning. Brenna Brownfield (6-4) came out of the pen to toss 0.2 innings and got the win.
Kennadie Goth was 4-for-5 at the top of the lineup with four singles and a run scored.
Game 2: Toledo 11, Kent State 3
Toledo scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Kent State's best scoring chance in the early innings came in the second with two outs. Allie Luther, Carlee Selle and Miller each tallied infield singles to load to bases, but could not score.
The fourth was the big frame for the Rockets when they scored eight runs on three home runs as they took advantage of the wind tunnel at the Diamond at Dix.
Kent State showed fight in the fifth inning and scored three runs on an RBI triple by Speers, a double by Brownfield and a single by Emily Dobbin.

Kent State and Toledo will meet tomorrow, Sunday, April 1 at 1 p.m. for the rubber match of the three-game series.
