Flashes Win Series Opener in Marathon Friday

OXFORD, Ohio – In an action-packed day at the Miami Softball Stadium, Kent State (20-17. 6-7 MAC) earned a split with Miami (16-19, 5-8 MAC). The Golden Flashes took game one, 4-3, but fell in an 11-inning marathon in game two, 6-5. Kent State recorded a total of 23 hits in both games, with Bailey Brownfield leading the charge with a five hit three RBI day while extending her hitting streak to 13 games.
Game 1: Kent State 4, Miami 3
Miami took the lead with a solo homer in the second, but the Golden Flashes responded to take the lead in the fourth with a three spot. Kent State banged out four hits in the frame and Emily Dobbin set the table with a single. Carlee Selle drove her in with an RBI groundout and Maria Cegledy and Allie Luther each recorded RBI knocks.
Kent State tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on a two-out double to drive in Holly Speers from first. Miami threatened in the sixth and score two, but could not score the tying run.
Madi Huck tossed all seven frames for the Flashes allowed five hits, with four walks while striking out two, while earning her 12th win of the season. Miami used a tandem of pitchers with Courtney Vierstra taking the loss, allowing all four runs with three walks and six strikeouts.
Bailey Brownfield was 2-for-3 with a single, a double, and an RBI.
Holly Speers was 0-for-1, but walked three times and scored two runs.
Game 2: Miami 6. Kent State 5 (11 innings)
Kent State came up on the short end of the longest game the team has played since 2015. It was a back-and-forth affair through the sixth inning with neither team able to pull away. Kent State was trailing by one in the sixth when Brenna Brownfield roped a double to left center to bring in the tying run.
Both teams had multiple runners on from the seventh through 10th innings, but were unable to score. Kent State's best chance occurred in the eighth with the bases loaded and one out, but could not get the ball out of the infield.
Miami's Lizzie Bollinger came through in the bottom of the 11th with two outs for a walk-off single to center to win the game for the RedHawks.
Kent State used two pitchers in the game. Brenna Brownfield started the game and threw 5.0 innings allowing five hits and five earned runs. Madi Huck had a tremendous appearance out of the pen, but was the tough luck loser (12-6), firing 5.2 innings and allowing just one run.
Kennadie Goth recorded a four-hit game at the top of the lineup.
Bailey Brownfield was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a walk.
