DalPorto homers, Murray dominates as KSU rolls
TOLEDO, OHIO – A first-inning three-run homer by Tim DalPorto was all KSU ace Joey Murray needed as Kent State tallied a 3-1 victory over Toledo Friday afternoon at Scott Park.
DalPorto's bullet to left in the top of the first came after Mason Mamarella led off the game with a single and Nick Kanavas reached as well. It was another in a long line of homers by the Flashes' catcher which have come on the road. Kent State turned the early lead over to the red-hot right-hander Murray.
While Murray walked an abnormally high five hitters, he made clutch pitches when he needed to, including the third when he left the bases loaded. The Dublin, Ohio native struck out eight over seven and one-third shutout innings. He gave way to rookie lefty Collin Romel, and the freshman picked up his eighth save, collecting the final five outs.
Offensively, the Flashes got another multi-hit game from freshman Nick Elsen. Senior Brad Hamilton added two hits for the good guys as well. Kent State improved to 23-0 when leading after eight innings.
Senior southpaw Jared Skolnicki heads to the slab for KSU on Saturday as the Golden Flashes continue the series. Toledo will counter with ace Sam Shutes who lost his first game of the year last week. He'll toss the first pitch at 1:05.
