
No. 29 Men’s Golf in Second at MAC Championship

FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The No. 29 Kent State men's golf team sits in second place after two rounds at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championship, at the Sycamore Hills Golf Course.
The Flashes posted an opening 5-over 293 and led the tournament by four strokes after the morning round. After a tough second round, the Flashes carded an 18-over 306 score that put them behind the leader, Ball State by a single margin of four strokes. After 36 holes, the Flashes carded a 23-over par 599 (293-306).
"It was a tough day for us today, it was probably one of the worst days we've had all year," said head coach Herb Page. "We played poorly on all facets of the day, things we haven't done most of the year and we just didn't execute."
Bjarki Petursson, who sits in a tie for second, leads the Flashes' squad after posting the only under-par score in the first round at 70 (-2). In the second round, Petursson finished at 6-over par 78, which put him at a 148 (+4) on the day. Petursson birdied six times in the opening round and finished the day with a total of nine.
All four scorers for the Flashes rank in the top-15. Josh Gilkison is second on his squad and is tied for seventh overall. Gilkison is currently 6-over par at 150. He started off with a 74 and finished the second round carding a 76 (+4) score.
Seniors Ian Holt and Chase Johnson are both tied for 11th overall at 7-over par 151. Holt carded rounds of 74 and 77, while Johnson opened with a 75 score and finished with a 76. Rounding out the lineup was Gisli Sveinbergsson who holds sole possession of 11th place. Sveinbergsson finished the day at 9-over 153 after firing an opening round of 76 and closing out the second round with a 77 score.
" We have work to do the next two days, nothing that isn't hard for us," Page said. "We have two more rounds to go and there are numerous teams with a chance to win. Ball State played a great afternoon round today. We just have to play better."
The third round of golf tees off tomorrow at 8 a.m. The Flashes will begins on hole one at 9:40 a.m. Results are available at golfstat.com.
