Eastern Michigan stuns Flashes in Friday Opener
KENT, OHIO – Eastern Michigan scored four late runs against the Kent State bullpen and cruised to an 8-4 win in the opening game of a three-game series Friday at Schoonover Stadium.
It was a damaging loss for front-running KSU (32-14), which saw its three game league lead trimmed to two. The magic number remains four to clinch the regular season title. Second place teams Ball State and Miami each won to close the divisional race.
EMU (20-28) took advantage of a rare off-day for both Joey Murray and Austin Havekost. Neither had given up more than two runs in any outing all season, but both gave up double that in the series opener. For Murray, all four he allowed came in the third inning. KSU rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game with one in the third and two in the sixth.
The Eagles broke the tie with a two-out two-run homer by Zach Owings in the seventh off Havekost and then added two more in the eighth. The Flashes could muster only one base-runner against the EMU bullpen – an eighth inning walk to Pavin Parks. The Flashes' final hit came in the sixth. They dropped to 2-12 when trailing after seven innings.
The Eagles also turned a triple play in the fourth.
The series will continue on Saturday when Jared Skolnicki gets the ball.
