Pitching Leads Way in KSU Win
Seven Flashes' arms combine to limit YSU to one run
NILES, OHIO – Kent State used a combination of seven pitchers to cool off the Youngstown State bats on Tuesday afternoon as the Flashes picked up a 5-1 win to finish a season sweep of the Penguins.
Starter Ryan Lane earned the win after tossing three shutout innings. He struck out five and allowed just one hit. The rookie right-hander is now 3-0 on the year. Tyler Drabick worked two scoreless innings after that, striking out three.
Offensively, KSU got going in the first when Pete Schuler corked a two-out, two-run double to right in the first. It became 4-0 in the fourth when Mason Mamarella singled. Kent State's final tally came across in the eighth when Josh Hollander ripped an RBI double.
Zach Spangler and Austin Havekost worked the final inning and two-thirds to hold off a YSU offense which had scored 10 runs or more in five consecutive games. Havekost picked up his first save of the year.
With a magic number of one, the Golden Flashes travel to Oxford for a three-game series with the RedHawks starting on Thursday at 5 p.m.
