Untimely weather break stalls KSU momentum; Flashes chance to clinch

OXFORD, OHIO – Kent State had momentum and Joey Murray seemingly on track. Mother Nature had other ideas.

Mere minutes after the Golden Flashes tied the game at 3-3, a radar-detected lightning strike sent both teams to their dugouts for a 70-minute break. The extended time took Murray out of the game, who at that point had retired seven straight Miami hitters – six of them by strikeout. As the game resumed in the bottom of the fourth, the RedHawks took advantage of six free bases – five walks and a hit batter – to take a 6-3 lead. They did not have a hit in the inning. MU rolled to a 10-3 win to keep its title chances alive.

Miami took advantage of a plethora of free bases throughout the game and brought many of the them around, scoring the final seven runs of the game. KSU pitchers walked 10 in the game and seven of them came around to score.

Murray was able to collect seven more strikeouts in his three innings, bringing his season total to 132. In the second inning he passed David Starn on the single-season strikeout list with number 128. Starn's record of 127 came in 2012.

Kent State will try again on Saturday to clinch the regular season title as its magic number stays at one. The Flashes' lead in the MAC is now two. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 4:00.
