KSU pitcher one of 25 semi-finalists for Golden Spikes Award
KENT, OHIO – Following a tremendous regular season, Kent State pitcher Joey Murray has been named a finalist for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award.
Presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation, the 41st annual award will be presented in late June in Los Angeles. It honors a collegiate or amateur baseball player who exemplifies outstanding ability, sportsmanship, character and overall contribution to the sport. Past winners have included Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant, Trevor Bauer and Buster Posey.
Murray set the single-season strikeout record for Kent State with a sensational 2018 regular season. He finished with 132 strikeouts and just 31 walks on the campaign. Murray will start post-season play with an 8-1 record and an ERA of 1.63. The Dublin, Ohio native recorded double-digit strikeout totals in six of his 14 starts. He held the opposition to four hits or fewer in 13 of his 14 starts.
Fans can vote for their finalists up to 25 times per day at GoldenSpikesAward.com. The voting is open now until Sunday, June 3. The finalists will be revealed on June 6.
Murray and the Golden Flashes will open the 2018 post-season on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Avon against either Central Michigan, Toledo or Eastern Michigan.
