On Oct. 10, 2017, Kent State athletics launched its first crowdfunding campaign. Â Seven months later, the end result of the new initiative was an overwhelming success.
Kent State coaches requested funding for various projects that were needs within their program. With an initial goal of $80,000, the 16 micro-campaigns started by The Golden Flashes Club raised over $128,000, totaling 842 gifts from 429 unique donors.
"Allowing coaches to identify needs and giving our supporters a number of options really made a difference," Deputy Athletic Director Casey Cegles said. "Our advancement team, coaches and student-athletes worked together to create this opportunity and the Kent State faithful gave us a resounding response of support. We blew our original goal out of the water."
One of the most successful micro-campaigns came from Kent State's wrestling team, generating over $25,000 from 201 donors. A November phone-a-thon earned the wrestlers 79 gifts and over $7,000 in a three-hour period.
