Flashes earn three seed in Lubbock, face Louisville Friday
KENT, OHIO – Kent State's 2018 season started in the Lone Star State and its post-season will continue there.
Announced as a three seed for the first time since 2012, Kent State's baseball team (39-16) has been assigned the Lubbock Regional hosted by Texas Tech, the number nine national seed. The Golden Flashes will face second-seeded Louisville (43-17) on Friday night at 7/6c with the host Red Raiders taking on fourth-seeded New Mexico State. It is a double-elimination regional paired with the regional hosted by Georgia.
"We couldn't be more excited about the opportunity to play in what I feel is the best regional in the country. Texas Tech was the number one team in the country for two months, New Mexico State is having a great year and we all know about Louisville. Fortunately it's an opponent we are very familiar with. We can't wait to get to Lubbock," head coach Jeff Duncan said.
Kent State is making its first trip to NCAA post-season play since 2014 when it ironically opened up in Louisville against the Cardinals. The Flashes were a three seed in 2011 when they were sent to Austin to face Texas State. That year, Andrew Chafin delivered on the national stage by shocking the host Longhorns, 7-5 in the winner's bracket final.
KSU will open the tournament Friday at a time to be determined. The event runs through the weekend. Kent State will practice on Thursday at Den Law Field, ranked one of the top three places to watch a college baseball game by Sports Illustrated On Campus.
