Small Earns NWCA Academic Honor
KENT, Ohio - Kent State’s Tyler Small (Littlestown, Pa.) was one of just five wrestlers named to the Division I NWCA All-Academic True Freshman Team Monday for the 2010-11 wrestling season.
An accounting major, Small carries a 3.34 cumulative grade point average. On the mat last season, he placed second at the 2011 MAC Championships.
Small also earned a victory at the 2011 NCAA Championships after claiming an automatic bid at 133 pounds. He finished 18-16 last season with four pins and two major decisions. Small made an immediate impact with the Golden Flashes last November, placing third at the Hokie Open and fourth at the Body Bar.
In order to be selected, each individual must have completed two full semesters at their institution along with meeting a particular GPA and competition mark.
Kent State finished 17th at the 2011 NCAA Championships and was ranked No. 17 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll after earning a share of the MAC regular season title.
