Head Coach Jeff Duncan announced on Wednesday that Brandon Larson will join the baseball staff in the role of volunteer assistant for the upcoming season.
Larson brings extensive playing experience to the program. After transferring from a junior college to LSU in 1997, Larson led the Tigers to the College World Series title and Larson was named MVP.
The standout infielder was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds in 1997 and found success in the Minor Leagues. Larson was named a Triple-A All-Star in 2002 and 2003 and was named the Reds' Minor League Player of the Year in the latter. He made his Major League debut in 2001 and had stints in the Majors with different teams through the 2005 season.
Most recently, Larson played for the Somerset Patriots of independent baseball's Atlantic League in 2008.
The hiring of Larson completes Kent State's coaching staff for the 2014 season. Head Coach Jeff Duncan joined the program in June alongside Associate Head Coach Mike Birkbeck, who just completed his 17th season as a Golden Flash. Duncan's first hire was to make former volunteer assistant Alex Marconi the team's assistant coach. With the addition of Larson, Kent State can now boast three former Major Leaguers on its staff; all played numerous years at the highest Minor League level.
