LONDON – Just two months after winning a national championship in the women's shot put, former Kent State All-American Danniel Thomas-Dodd nearly medaled at the 2017 IAAF World Championships, finishing fourth in the event Wednesday evening at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.
Thomas-Dodd's best mark came on her fifth attempt, as she unleashed a throw of 18.91 meters (62'-0.5") to move past Hungary's Anita Márton into third with one throw remaining. Márton, the bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, answered with a mark of 19.49 meters on her final attempt to capture silver.
Lijiao Gong of China won gold with a mark of 19.94 meters, while 2016 Olympic gold medalist Michelle Carter (USA) earned bronze with a mark of 19.14 meters.
Thomas-Dodd recorded 18.70 meters on her first throw to sit in third following the opening round of Wednesday's finals. She remained in the top-four for the duration of the competition.
On Tuesday, Thomas-Dodd had a mark of 18.42 meters on her only counting throw of the qualifying round to sit in fifth-place on the day.
The performance is the best to-date on the world stage for Thomas-Dodd. She placed 22nd at the 2015 IAAF World Championships and followed with a 25th-place showing last year in Rio.
