INDIANAPOLIS – The Kent State University track and field program has 12 student-athletes who have earned spots to compete at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Championships, the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced on Thursday. The preliminary round will be held May 23-25 in Jacksonville, Florida.
For the third year in a row, TJ Lawson has already qualified for the NCAA National Championships in the decathlon, as the multi-events are not held at preliminary championships sites. Lawson will be seeded fifth in the competition with a school-record 7,876 points at the Tennessee Relays last month.
For each individual event contested at each of the preliminary sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams were accepted into the competition.
The men's team has seven qualifiers, as Christian Champen (pole vault), Trevor Detillion (discus throw), Samory Fraga (long jump) and Craig Stevens, Jr. (triple jump) have each qualified for the third year in a row. Anthony Milliner will compete in the triple jump for the second time.
Rounding out the qualifiers on the men's side are Ryan Demaline (shot put) and Jake Wickey (hammer throw).
Five members of the women's team qualified for the East Preliminary Championships, led by Grace Tennant's trio of entries. Tennant will be in action on all three days of the competition with entries in the discus throw, javelin throw and shot put. Gabby Bailey will join Tennant in the discus throw and shot put.
Nicole Yeargin earned qualifying spots in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash.
