OXFORD, Miss. – After allowing three runs in the bottom of the sixth, Kent State was unable to score in the seventh and fell to Southeastern Louisiana, 6-5, in the final game at the Ole Miss Classic on Sunday.
The Golden Flashes (7-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when sophomore Bri Despines hit a single and senior Emily Lippe followed with a double to right-center.
Sophomore Macy Irelan retired the first six batters she faced and only two reached base over the first three innings before allowing singles to the first four batters in the bottom of the fourth as the Lions took a 2-1 lead. Freshman Megan Nuechterlein replaced Irelan in the circle and got the first two batters out before allowing a single that made it 3-1.
Graduate student Julia Mazanec tied it with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth and junior Savannah Wing drove in two more with a double in the top of the sixth.
A wild pitch and throwing error aided the Lions in scoring three to go back ahead in the bottom of the sixth.
Irelan finished with three strikeouts over 3.2 innings and Nuechterlein had one strikeout over 2.1 innings.
Kent State will go back on the road next weekend for five scheduled games at the Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina.
