Alex Bloom joined the Kent State track and field program as an assistant coach in August 2021. A 2018 All-American in the heptathlon, Bloom is responsible for training Golden Flashes student-athletes in the horizontal jumps and combined events. He also worked with high jump competitors during his first two seasons on staff.
Under Bloom’s leadership, the Golden Flashes excelled both indoors and outdoors during the 2022-23 season. Three Flashes – Alexander Shields (110m hurdles), Alexandre Malanda (triple jump), and Svenia De Coninck (high jump) – all qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, with Shields and Malanda winning their respective events at both the indoor and outdoor MAC Championships. Shields also took home the heptathlon title at the Indoor Championships.
Bloom was named the Mid-American Conference Men’s Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2022. He coached three conference champions between the 2022 indoor and outdoor season in the heptathlon, decathlon, and outdoor men's long jump. He also helped lead Serena Choi to a second-place finish in the triple jump at the 2022 Indoor Championships. Three members of the men’s team – Alexandre Malanda, Anthony Millner and Alex Shields – qualified for the 2022 NCAA East Regional under Bloom’s guidance.
Prior to joining the Kent State staff, Bloom served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Miami, assisting daily with jumps and combined events training while helping coach the sprints and hurdles group as needed. Student-athletes he coached set four school records and two qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials. Michelle Atherley placed second in the heptathlon to lead Hurricanes' women’s team to a tie for 19th at the national meet.
Before Miami, he served as a volunteer assistant for two seasons at Cincinnati. Bloom worked primarily with student-athletes in the combined events and high jump, but also assisted with the throws, horizontal jumps and sprints groups. He helped with several office duties including the development of training programs and allowable recruiting activities. During his time on staff, Bearcats student-athletes set school records in the men’s indoor heptathlon and women’s indoor high jump and Loretta Blaut placed third in high jump at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
As a student-athlete at Cincinnati, Bloom earned Second Team All-America honors in the heptathlon during the 2018 indoor season and owns school records in men’s heptathlon and indoor high jump. He won two American Athletic Conference titles in the decathlon and added a high jump title. His achievements in the classroom resulted in a pair of USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
Bloom graduated from Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science in exercise and fitness in August 2018 and earned his master's degree in coaching education and athlete development from Xavier in August 2020.
