KSU CAREER: Earned three varsity “K’s” in football for the Flashes from 1934-36…Played center…Captain of the team as a senior…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1930 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School…Earned varsity letters in football and track for the Riders…POST KSU CAREER: Began coaching in 1936 with Eaton School in Lorain County…Also coached for Charlestown (1937-38) and Aurora (1938-43) before moving to Ravenna where he coached football, basketball, and track…An outstanding football coach known for his innovative offensive game plans…One of the top archers in the U.S. as well…Captained the U.S. archer team at the World Championships in the Netherlands and at Valley Forge, PA…A member of the board of the United States Archery Association and helped to formulate the Olympic archery rules…Taught archery at several Kent branch campuses…Ravenna High School’s “Gilcrest Stadium” is named in his honor…PERSONAL: Born on December 14, 1911 in Kenmore…A teacher for 40 years and an avid musician for more than 50 years…Married to the former Thelma Bulger…They have three children…Currently serves as a probation officer and counselor for the Portage County Juvenile Court…A charter inductee in the Portage County Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
