HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1938 graduate of Akron Garfield High School…He lettered five times, two each in basketball and baseball, and once in football…Captained both the baseball and basketball teams…KSU CAREER: Earned nine varsity “K’s” as a member of the baseball, basketball, and football teams…His career spanned the 1939-42 seasons…Co-captain of the 1942 basketball team and captain of the baseball squad in 1941 and ’42…Received All-Conference mention in basketball and was first-team All-League selection as a catcher in baseball…Earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1942 and his master’s in 1948…POST KSU CAREER: Played professional baseball in the Boston Red Sox organization (1942, 1946-49)…Also was invited to try out with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions football teams but chose baseball instead…Joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943…Served as a flight leader for the 315th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 10th Air Force…Was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on two occasions, the Air Medal three times, as well as two decorations from the Chinese Government and three Battle Stars…Following his military and baseball careers he was the head coach of three sports at Canal Fulton High School…Also coached at Coventry High School, Hower Vocational High School (Akron) and Hialeah High School (Miami, Florida) before retiring in 1985.
