KENT, Ohio -- The Kent State University mens basketball team (18-3, 12-1 MAC) won its eighth straight game, rallying from an early 13-point deficit to defeat Bowling Green State University (10-13, 6-7 MAC) at the M.A.C. Center in front of a national audience on ESPN2 tonight (Feb. 14). Senior forward Bryan Bedford (Racine, Wis./Case) posted a career-high 20 points to lead the Golden Flashes to their 12th win in the last 13 games.
- Bowling Green jumped out front early, twice holding 13-point leads at 15-2 and 17-4. But Kent State would claw back into the game and used a 14-6 run over five minutes to take a 31-30 lead with 2:28 to play in the first half on a tip-in by junior forward Jason Edwin (Warsaw, Ill./Warsaw). However, the Falcons would rally for the final five points of the half to take a 35-31 advantage into intermission.
- Kent State started the second half with a 13-3 run, that was capped by an Edwin three-pointer, opening a six-point lead, 44-38, just under three minutes into the half. From there, the lead was whittled away and Bowling Green eventually took a 58-51 lead midway through the half, thanks to a 9-2 run after the game was tied 49-49 at the 13:17 mark.
- The Golden Flashes battled back to tie the score on three occasions, but never managed to take a lead until a jumper by senior center John Edwards (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) with 4:49 to play put KSU up 67-66, and Bowling Green would not lead again. The Falcons tied the score at 67-67, then again at 69-69, the seventh tie of the half, but sophomore guard DeAndre Haynes (Detroit, Mich./Southwestern) scored on a driving layup to kick start an 11-3 run over the games final three minutes as Kent State pulled away for the win. Kent State forced the Falcons into three turnovers and held BGSU to 1-for-8 shooting in the closing minutes.
- Edwin finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three blocks and three steals, while Haynes had 12 points, all coming in the second half. Bedford hit 5-of-10 shots and 4-of-8 three-point attempts. Bowling Green finished with four players in double figures, led by 20 from Cory Eyink.
- Kent State is next in action when it hosts Marshall University, Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.
- NOTES: Kent State won for the second time in four games, and for the third time this season, when being outshot from the field and three-point range... Bedfords previous career high was 18 points against Western Michigan Jan. 21... BGSU out-rebounded the Golden Flashes 36-29... Kent State committed just six turnovers and tallied nine steals.
