MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Kent State University men's basketball team (16-3, 10-1 MAC) used a big second half to defeat Central Michigan University (3-18, 0-11) 76-61 today (Feb. 7). The Golden Flashes, trailing by one at the break, shot 55.2 (16-of-29) percent from the field in the second half to outscore the Chippewas 42-26 after intermission.
- The Golden Flashes used a 22-3 run to open the second half, turning a one-point deficit into a 58-38 lead with just over nine minutes remaining. In the run, Eric Haut canned three three-pointers, while John Edwards had three baskets, all dunks, including back-to-back slams to open the second half, as KSU opened its big lead.
- Kent State held a 41-26 advantage on the boards, while the Golden Flashes posted assists on 11-of-16 field goals in the second half. The Flashes also hit 11-of-13 (.846) free-throw attempts in the contest.
- Haut and Edwards tied for the team-high with 14 points, while Jason Edwin had 13 points and seven rebounds. DeAndre Haynes connected for 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. Scott Cutley had seven rebounds.
- The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring numerous lead changes and ties. The Chippewas took a 35-34 advantage into the break, thanks in large part to 14 points from Gerrit Brigitha. The Golden Flashes were led by nine points from Edwin. Kent State fell behind early in the opening frame, but rallied with a 11-2 spurt midway through the half that put KSU up 22-17 with 8:35 to play. From there, the teams traded baskets going into intermission.
- Kent State is next in action when it opens the first of four straight games at home, beginning with a contest against the University at Buffalo, Wednesday, Feb. 11. Game time at the M.A.C. Center is 7 p.m.
- NOTES: Kent State spoiled Central Michigan's 100th Anniversary of men's basketball celebration... KSU is 10-1 to start MAC play for the third straight year, something that had not been done in the previous 50 MAC seasons... The Flashes have now defeated each of the seven MAC teams that knocked off Kent State last year.
