Gates Named to Academic All-MAC Squad

KENT, Ohio -- Kent State's Armon Gates was one of six players to be honored when the Mid-American Conference announced its 2006-07 Men's Basketball Academic All-MAC team Wednesday (Mar. 21), as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions.
The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Gates, who earned his undergraduate degree in leisure studies from Kent State has a 3.675 GPA while pursuing a master's degree in sports administration. This season, Gates helped the Golden Flashes to a ninth consecutive 20-win season (21-11) by averaging 9.3 points per game and hitting a team-leading 72 three-pointers. Gates finished his career tied for second place at KSU with 200 three-pointers. He played in all 32 games, starting 17.
Gates is the first Golden Flash to be named to the Academic All-MAC Team since Bryan Bedford in 2003.
