Late comeback comes up short for KSU
ATHENS, Ohio - A late comeback by Kent State came up short as the Golden Flashes were defeated 71-65 in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
Down by ten with four minutes to go, junior Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va. / Motlow C.C. (Tenn.)) and senior guard Al Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J. / Redlands (Okla.)) helped fueled a late rally by KSU. The duo combined for 14 of the Golden Flashes final 16 points as they pulled within two with 30 seconds remaining before Ohio put the game away at the foul line.
Evans finished the game with 21 points while Fisher racked up 19 points and six assists. Junior guard Chris Singletary (Chicago, Ill./Florida Prep.) was also in double figures with 13 points while adding five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Down 14-8 midway through the first half Evans ignited a 10-2 run by Kent State scoring eight points as the Golden Flashes took an 18-16 lead. KSU would remain in control the rest of the half taking the 30-26 lead at the break.
With Kent State up four at half time, an 18-7 run by Ohio put the Bobcats up 44-37 near the 11 minute mark of the second half. Behind Fisher, who scored seven of the next 10 points for KSU, the Golden Flashes closed the gap to three before Tommy Freeman caught fire for Ohio. The sophomore guard scored 10 of his 18 points during a four minute stretch as the Bobcats built the 59-49 lead.
Senior Julian Sullinger (Columbus, Ohio / Fork Union Military Acad. [Va.]), led Kent State with seven rebounds. The Golden Flashes shot 40.6 percent from the field, but connect on just 7-25 from three (28.0 percent) and a mere 54.5 percent from the foul line.
Freeman's 18 led Ohio which also received 16 points and nine rebounds from Jerome Tillman. The Bobcats shot 43.4 percent for the game and held a 40-35 edge in rebounding.
Kent State continues MAC play on Wednesday at home against Bowling Green.
NOTES: Tyree Evans has led the team in scoring in four of his six games ... It was the third time this season he scored 21 points and nit five three-pointers ... Al Fisher is averaging 19 points in nine career MAC road games.
