KENT STATE-UAB POSTGAME QUOTES (11/14/2009)
Kent State Head Coach Geno Ford
Opening Statement:
“It was really encouraging what happened because anyone who was at the game yesterday saw that we won because of (senior guard) Chris (Singletary). He was a force and bailed us out when we needed it. Tonight it was (Senior guard) Mike McKee and (redshirt junior guard) Rod Sherman who were fantastic, and we had some other guys make some big shots, like the three (freshman guard) Randal Holt made on the wing that gave us back the lead (6:42 second half)”
On key free throws by senior guard Mike McKee to close out the win:
“We're very comfortable with Mike going to get the ball right there, especially early in the year. Mike's got a good poise about him.”
On impact of the return of redshirt junior guard Rodriquez Sherman:
“He's much different than he ever was. He's not the same player that he was out there two years ago. He's a much more confident with the ball, and he's got better ball skills. Statistically, he was fantastic, and he's capable of doing that most nights. He made some unbelievable shots when we needed them.”
Kent State Redshirt Junior Guard Rodriquez Sherman
On attacking the basket on offense:
“At the beginning of the game, a lot of my teammates were telling me to do what I do and get to the basket. That's one of my advantages, so whenever I saw the opening, I attacked the basket.”
On finding a way to win tough games:
“We have a totally different team from last year because on any given night, it could be somebody's night. We've done a better job of becoming a family. We're just trying to get our team chemistry right and put it all together.”
Kent State Senior Guard Mike McKee
On making up for Singletary being held to two points:
“Chris Singletary is a humungous part of our team, but we have a veteran group of guys. The big guys on the inside did their part tonight to make up for what we lacked with Chris.”
On team's struggles to rebound the ball:
“It's definitely an area of concern to us. We pay attention to it every day in practice, and I think we're taking the necessary steps to correct that.”
UAB Head Coach Mike Davis
Opening statement:
“We knew it was going to be a tough physical game and a challenge for us. We dug ourselves a hole that was too big in the first half, and Kent State had a whole lot to do with that.”
