Assistant Coaches Bracket
Kent State assistant coach to help raise awareness for heart disease.
KENT, Ohio – Kent State Assistant Coach Eric Haut has been selected to participate in CollegeInsider.com's Second Annual 'Shots from the Heart,' free throw competition to help raise awareness for heart disease. First round action takes place in November as college basketball coaches from across the country will compete against one another in a free throw shooting tournament, to benefit the American Heart Association. The event also pays tribute to legendary coach Skip Prosser who passed away on July 26, 2007 of a heart attack.
There will be two 64-coach fields (one for head coaches and one for assistant coaches). Participating coaches will compete in a free throw shooting contest, which will be bracketed in NCAA tournament format. Coaches will not have to actually compete against each other on the same court. Each coach will shoot 25 free throws at his convenience. A member of the athletic department will tally the results and the coach with the most makes would advance. To avoid ties the following scoring system will be used:
- Shots 1-10 are worth 1 point
- Shots 11-15 are worth 2 points
- Shots 16-20 are worth 3 points
- Shots 21-24 are worth 4 points
- Shot 25 is worth 5 points
One of the most talented shooters in Kent State history, Haut made 84 percent from the foul line during his playing career. During the 2003 season he missed just 11 free throws all season (70-81) connecting on 86.4 percent, a mark that sits as the third best single season percentage in school history.
In the first round, Haut will be matched up against Bill Armstrong of Ole Miss. A 2001 graduate of UAB, Armstrong served as team captain as a senior and helped the Blazers reach the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and the NIT in 1998.
The winner of the Haut-Armstrong match-up moves on to the second round and face the winner of Dustin Kerns (Santa Clara) and Steve Middleton (Oklahoma State).
People can pledge quarter, a dollar, ten dollars or more for each free throw made during the competition. All money raised will go to the American Heart Association. Skip Prosser spent 21 years as collegiate head coach at Loyola (MD), Xavier and Wake Forest. He made 18 postseason appearances and is the only coach in NCAA history to take three separate schools to the NCAA Tournament in his first year coaching the teams. In 2008 CollegeInsider.com created the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award, which is given annually to the coach who not only achieves success on the basketball court but who also displays moral integrity off the court as well.
