Golden Flash guard honored by Collegeinsider.com
KENT, Ohio – Kent State's Michael Porrini (Massillon, Ohio/Gulf Coast C.C. [Fla.]) has been named to the Mid-Major Defensive All-American Team by CollegeInsider.com. Porrini earns a spot on the team following a 2010-11 season in which he was also the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a Honorable Mention All-MAC selection.
Standing a mere 6'2", Porrini developed into one of the most versatile defenders in the conference this season. With him guarding any one of four positions on the floor from point guard to power forward, he helped cornerstone a Kent State defense that led the league and ranked 28th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage defense (.314). Among players 6'2" and shorter, Porrini was second in the league with 4.7 rebounds per game, including 3.4 on the defensive end. He had 14 games this season with three or more steals and ranked fifth in the MAC with 1.8 steals per game this season.
His toughness transcended to the offensive end where he was one of five Golden Flashes to average more than 9.9 points per game. Scoring 10.1 ppg this season, Porrini also added a team best 4.3 assists per game. His 160 assists on the year were the fifth highest individual total in school history. Over the final six games of the season during Kent State's run to the MAC Tournament Championship game and the NIT quarterfinals he averaged 13.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting 48 percent from the field and 47 percent (8-17) from three.
Porrini is one of four starters scheduled to return to the Golden Flashes next year.
