
Golden Flashes Compete at NCAA Championship Course at Pre-Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Kent State University men's and women's cross country team competed at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Saturday afternoon hosted at Indiana State. The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course is the site of the 2013 NCAA National Championships in November.
The men raced to a seventh place finish with 211 points out of the 20 competing teams. The squad was led by junior Matt Kahl, who crossed the finish line in 11th place out of 135 participants with a time of 25:13.14.
Following behind Kahl were teammates Andrew Goodwin (23rd – 25:30.63), Jared Fleming (40th – 25:54.15) and Grant Onken (51st – 26:00.71). Rounding out the competitors were Samuel Allen (97th – 26:38.78) and Logan Kettlewell (26:54.13).
Head Coach Mark Croghan's women's squad placed 32nd overall with 747 points on the 6k course. Sophomore Rachel Slingluff led the team with a time of 22:40.95 to finish 94th out of the 227 participants. Melinda Sawnor was next (106th – 22:49.27), followed by Paige Foster (23:21.15), Brigid Callaghan (24:01.51) and Taylor Wickey (24:14.57). Rounding out the competitors was Kristen Bergmeyer, who finished the course in 24:15.38.
The teams will now prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championships hosted at Bowling Green on Saturday, Nov. 2.
